Is This “New Math”? Nope. Just a Better Way to Teach the Old Math.

The other day, I got an email from a frustrated parent who thought I was teaching “new math” and making things more confusing. They were worried that my shaped organizers for multiplication and long division were changing how math should be taught.

I get it. Math has looked the same for generations. Anything that seems different can feel confusing.

But here’s the truth: this isn’t new math. These organizers don’t change how we multiply or divide. They just help kids keep their work neat, follow each step, and actually understand what they’re doing.

If anything, they make traditional methods easier to grasp.

Why Use Shape Organizers for Multiplication and Long Division?

Top Benefits of Shape Organizers & Grid Paper:

  1. Keeps math work neat and structured.
  2. Helps students follow steps correctly.
  3. Reduces frustration with long division and multiplication.
  4. Supports struggling learners with step-by-step guidance.
  5. Builds confidence through organized practice.

If you’ve seen a child struggle with long division or multi-digit multiplication, you know how quickly their work can become a mess. Numbers get misplaced. Steps are skipped. Before long, frustration takes over. That’s where shape organizers come in.

These organizers provide a structured layout that guides students through each step. Instead of guessing where to write numbers, they follow a clear framework that keeps everything lined up and easy to read. This reduces mistakes and builds confidence as they see their work come together correctly.

For struggling learners, shape organizers make math feel more manageable. They no longer have to remember where each number belongs—the layout directs them. With a clean, organized workspace, mistakes are easier to catch and correct. That leads to better understanding and less frustration.

Why Use Grid Paper for Math?

use graph paper grids for improved long division learning

Grid paper is another great tool for helping students stay organized in math. Unlike traditional lined or blank paper, grid paper gives each number its own space. This keeps digits from drifting out of place and makes it easier to follow multi-step problems.

For multiplication and long division, alignment is key.

When numbers don’t line up correctly, mistakes happen. Grid paper keeps students’ work organized, which lets them focus on solving the problem instead of worrying about where to place their digits.

Some students find grid paper easier to use, while others do better with shape organizers—or even a mix of both. The key is to experiment and see what helps each learner stay organized and confident.

I start with shape organizers to introduce the concept. Once students get comfortable with the process, they move on to grid paper for extra practice. Over time, they gain confidence and no longer need organizers or grid paper at all.

Shaped Organizers vs. Grid Paper: Which Method is Best?

The right method depends on the student.

Some children love the structure of shape organizers, while others prefer the flexibility of grid paper. Often, students need a mix of both as they transition toward solving problems without support.

Here are a few things to consider when choosing a method:

  • Beginner students may benefit from shape organizers because they provide step-by-step guidance. They allow students to learn the process.
  • Students who struggle with alignment might find grid paper more helpful.
  • Confident learners may prefer to move straight to blank paper once they understand the process.
  • For review and test prep, a combination of methods can help students build confidence and adaptability.

Both shape organizers and grid paper offer valuable support, and choosing the right fit can help a child feel more confident and successful in math.

Best Ways to Use These Methods

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but there are plenty of ways to make the most of these tools.

  • Printable Versions – Great for one-time practice or homework assignments. Print as many as needed to support daily work.
  • Reusable Plastic Sleeves – Place printed organizers or grid paper inside a plastic sleeve and use dry-erase markers for repeated practice without wasting paper.

At this time, I don’t offer digital versions because I believe students learn best using pencil and paper or dry-erase markers with a reusable plastic sleeve. Hands-on practice helps reinforce concepts and improves retention.

However, if you want to convert PDFs into digital resources, this guide walks you through the process step by step.

Using these strategies, students – whether in homeschool, classroom, or intervention settings – can practice in a way that suits their learning style, making math less stressful and more approachable.
